City of Charleston Updates
City Approves Funding for Next Phase of Battery Extension Project
The city and the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) have been in a partnership since 2018, as the United States Congress approved a feasibility study on the peninsula. The results showed that the city is at a high risk for storm surge. Together, they have been working on how to make sure it is protected by extending the seawall.
City Seeks Community Input on 62-acre MUSC Rezoning Proposal
The Medical University of South Carolina is planning a major expansion of its downtown Charleston campus and city leaders are asking for public input before moving forward.
The proposal, known as the Medical District Overlay Zone, would rezone nearly 62 acres across 61 parcels within MUSC’s existing footprint. The area is about the size of nearby neighborhoods like Radcliffborough or Harleston Village.
Healthcare and Health on the Move
Downtown has long served as the hub for doctors and hospitals in Charleston, with Roper Hospital and Medical University of South Carolina University Medical Center as next door neighbors. The last few years have seen greater attention to the areas surrounding the peninsula where the population is booming.

Town of Mount Pleasant Updates

The town was the 12th-fastest-growing municipality from 2010 to 2020, according to the U.S. Census Bureau. In that time span, Mount Pleasant’s population shot up by 34 percent — over 20,000 more residents than at the start of the decade.
